Think of the PCF Builder as your go-to tool for understanding and managing your product carbon footprints. It's like having a sustainability expert helping you track and reduce carbon with reliable, accurate, and actionable data. Except it’s free.
-
Absolutely! You can update most product information even after creating a PCF. The only exception is the Product ID, which we keep locked to maintain data integrity. Don't worry about manual updates – when you change product data, your PCFs will automatically refresh to reflect the new information.
-
We know typos happen. While you can't edit a Product ID once it's created (for data tracking purposes), the solution is straightforward. Just delete the entry, let us know and we can remove it from the system. Then, create a new product entry with the correct ID and enter your information again.

You've got two options for managing emission factors in the Material Catalog. You can either input custom data from your suppliers (perfect for when you have specific, primary data) or choose from our comprehensive secondary source database, like Ecoinvent. This gives you the flexibility to use whatever data best fits your needs.
-
Nope, no need to worry about the CPC code. It's optional and will stay that way. While it can be helpful for organizing and reporting, you can create your PCF without it.
-
Can't find the exact material or emission factor you need? No problem. You can use a proxy emission factor from a similar material instead. This way, you can keep moving forward with your PCF calculations even when you don't have the exact data you're looking for.
-
Yes. Save yourself some time by importing your product and material lists directly into the platform.
-
We keep our emission factor databases fresh with regular updates. The timing varies by data source. Some get updated yearly, others every six months. This way, you're always working with the most current information available.
-
Yes, you can get started with PCFs before completing your facility measurements. While they're separate modules, if you do need both facility measurements and PCFs, you may want to tackle the facility measurements first. This can give you valuable insights that make creating your PCFs even easier.
-
With all your data ready to go, you're looking at about 60 minutes to complete a PCF from start to finish. The total time can change depending on a few factors:
- How readily available your data is
- Whether you need to track down specific emission factors
- Your familiarity and experience with the process
- The complexity of your request (for example, calculating a weighted average PCF takes longer than a single product)
- Which methodology you're using (some require more detailed information)
Don't worry if it takes longer at first. You'll get faster as you become more familiar with the process. -
To build a Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), the general process is as follows:
- Upload your product. Keep in mind (depending on your business model) what you refer to as a "material" may be considered a "product" in the platform's terminology.
- Select the product from your list and click on “Build PCF.”
- In the PCF Builder, add input materials if relevant, complete the remaining steps, and generate your PCF result.
You must upload your product first, as the PCF Builder is accessed through the product entry.
If you find any issues along the way, send a message to our customer success team.
