Lesson 5 | The benefits of building a PCF

Welcome 👋

As a supplier, product carbon footprints (PCFs) aren't just about measuring emissions. They're valuable tools that can help you improve operations, strengthen customer relationships, and stay ahead of market demands.

In lesson five, you’ll uncover:

  1. How PCFs help you spot emission sources and reduce risks.
  2. How PCFs enable effective collaboration across supply chains.
  3. How to use PCFs to gain an edge over your competitors.

The "visibility" challenge

To build decarbonization plans that align with climate science, you need to address emissions beyond your direct control. These are called Scope 3 emissions, and they typically make up more than 70% of an organization's carbon footprint.

Let’s take an automotive parts manufacturer as an example:

  • They can control their factory emissions (Scope 1)
    • Natural gas used in processing
    • On-site owned vehicles
  • They also control their purchased energy usage (Scope 2)
    • Electricity needed for manufacturing processes
  • But most emissions come from their supply chain (Scope 3):
    • Materials such as steel or aluminum
    • Transporation of these materials to the factory
    • Services such as welding done by a third party

One of the biggest challenges you may face is getting accurate emissions data from your own suppliers. Without reliable data, it's hard to know where the best opportunities are for reducing emissions.

This is where PCFs become valuable. They give you:

  • Transparent, primary data about emissions sources
  • Clear view of where emissions are highest in your supply chain
  • Information you can trust to make reduction decisions

Plus, PCFs work both ways:

  • Your customers get the data they need for reporting and procurement decisions
  • You get the insights to build better reduction strategies
  • Everyone in the supply chain can work together more effectively

PCFs and supplier collaboration

PCFs don't just help you respond to customer requests. They also help you work better with your own suppliers. For example, you can:

  • Use PCF data to identify which suppliers have the highest emissions
  • Work together to find reduction opportunities
  • Share successful reduction strategies across your supply base
  • Build stronger relationships through shared climate goals

Think of it like a relay race, with each supplier passing accurate emissions data to the next. The better you work together, the more successful everyone becomes at reducing emissions (and making cost-savings).

Benefits of building PCFs

1. Better visibility into your supply chain

PCFs give you precise data about emissions throughout your production, distribution, and disposal processes. This transparency helps you make informed decisions and shows your customers you're serious about climate action.

2. Competitive advantage

Just as tracking spending helps you save money, tracking emissions helps you spot inefficiencies in your operations. Finding these hotspots often leads to cost-saving initiatives, better product design, and improved material sourcing.

3. Credible reduction plans

PCFs work like a diagnostic tool, showing you which changes will have the biggest impact on reducing emissions. This helps you:

  • Create credible reduction targets
  • Build effective decarbonization strategies
  • Track progress against your goals

4. Ready for customer requests

Increasingly, your customers need detailed emissions data for their own reporting requirements. Having PCFs ready means you're prepared to meet these requests quickly and help your customers comply with relevant regulations. This can make you a more valuable supplier.

5. Understand your risk exposure to carbon pricing

Think of PCFs as an early warning system. They help you:

  • Understand how future carbon pricing could affect your products
  • Prepare for emerging regulations such as the EU’s CBAM
  • Adapt your business before new requirements hit
  • Identify and manage other potential risks and costs
